A jewelry appraisal can be among your most important documents. Jewelry appraisals have different functions but the most common jewelry appraisal is an Insurance Replacement Appraisal.
An Insurance Replacement Appraisal will provide you with sufficient information to ensure a replacement of equal utility, kind, quality and value. This definitive report will assist the insurance company and/or replacement agency in providing a comparable replacement to that which was lost.
To be sure that your investments are protected, your jewelry appraisal should be current (dated within the past 18 months) and thorough. Below are a few key items that should be included in your appraisal:
- Type of mounting and material.
- Type and number of gemstones.
- Cut, clarity, color and carat weight of diamond(s) and other gemstones.
- Type, size, shape, and luster of pearls.
- Manufacturers’ names, serial numbers, and model numbers of watches.
- Style, length, weight, and karat of gold chain.
- The current retail replacement value along with any applicable sales tax.

Maertens Fine Jewelry and Gifts has been very helpful with my clients over the years with their appraisals. Without the appraisals we would have never realized that the particular pieces that we needed to insure increased in value and therefore needed to increase their insurance coverage. I always recommend to my clients that they obtain aprraisals every 5 years or so depending the the piece, this will give them the extra piece of mind of knowing that they have their pieces properly protected. Maertens does this in an affordable and easy way for myself and clients. We continue to recommend them to all our clients
Being an independent insurance agent, it is my job to ensure that the property and assets of my customers are adequately insured. Scheduling your jewelry on your homeowners/renters insurance policy is very important. A detailed appraisal of your jewelry by a Certified Gemologist, such as that you can obtain from Maerten’s Fine Jewelry, ensures you have enough coverage to buy a replacement. Your personal possessions are insured under your standard homeowners or renters policy for “named” perils such as fire, theft or lightning, Separtely scheduling an accurately appraised item provides additional coverage against “all perils”. Therefore, if you drop your diamond ring down the kitchen sink or the dog eats your favorite bracelet, it’s insured.
Knowing you are adequately insured gives you peace of mind that there will not be any issues if you have to file a claim. I feel confident in recommending that my client’s pay a visit to Maertens to have their jewelry appraised!
