Seahorses by
the Bay

The Seahorses By The Bay
Project was started by Annmarie Gardens and the
Calvert Marine Museum as a public art project to
commemorate the 350th anniversary of Calvert County,
Maryland in 2004. Each school in Calvert County, both
public and private, had the opportunity to design a
theme for and decorate a 6” fiberglass seahorse
statue. The seahorses were displayed in prominent
locations around Calvert County. After their public
display, the seahorses were auctioned off. The project
was very successful, raising over $90,000 for the art
programs in the local schools. To learn more about the

Inspired by the project, Heather Maertens created a
seahorse miniature as a pendant. She carved a wax and
the seahorse was cast precious metal. After many
requests for a smaller version, Heather carved a
second wax and then an even smaller wax was made for
earrings and charms. The seahorses are available in
14kt white or yellow gold or sterling silver with your
choice of diamond and gemstone accents. Fifteen
percent of the proceeds from each sale are donated to
the Seahorses By The Bay Project. To date, we have
donated just over $6,000
